Texans draft rumors Why Houston could draft Will Anderson avoid QB options with No. 2 pick

The Texans have the No. 2 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, and for almost all of draft season, it has been expected that they would take a quarterback with their top choice. However, at least one notable NFL analyst thinks it's po sible that Houston could pa s on a signal-caller with that pick. Sports Illustrated's has speculated in recent days that the Texans could opt to select another player at No. 2 overall even though one Mookie Betts Jersey of C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young is guaranteed to be on the board. MORE: Why would the Texans do that? As Breer explained in a recent article, it's all about the history of the brain trust in charge of Houston. General manager Nick Caserio has been in the NFL for 22 seasons. Over that time, over all the drafts hes been a part of, the highest his team has drafted a quarterback was 62nd. That pick was Jimmy Garoppolo. Davis Mills, who the Texans took 66th two years ago, would be second on that list. Meanwhile, new coach DeMeco Ryans, over six years in San Francisco, saw one quarterback taken higher than that, and the Niners got to three NFC title games with quarterbacks other than Trey Lance. Thats why I dont think Caserio and Ryans will reach on a guy theyre not 100% sold on with the second pick (maybe theyd be more open to a dice roll later in the draft). Both guys have seen teams built in other ways, and both have seen teams find quarterbacks in other ways. So if anyone will be open to it, itd be these two guys. Breer's point is well-taken, though it is noteworthy that Caserio spent the first 19 years of his career in New England. The Patriots never had to worry about taking quarterbacks early thanks to the presence of Tom Brady, so that may better explain Caserio's aversion to highly-drafted pa sers. Even still, it's worth exploring what the Texans could do with the No. 2 pick if they don't select a quarterback and which signal-caller they could target if Stroud or Young isn't the pick. NFL DRAFT:| If the Texans don't select a quarterback with the No. 2 pick, they will likely be facing two legitimate choices with it. They are as follows: Getty Images Will Anderson, EDGE, Alabama Anderson is regarded as the best pa s rusher in this year's cla s, and it is expected that he will be the first non-quarterback off the board in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Alabama product comes into the NFL with an arsenal of pa s-rushing moves that should allow him to smoothly transition to the next level and quickly become a double-digit sack threat. Anderson played 41 games during his career with the Crimson Tide. During that time, he racked up a whopping 34.5 sacks; that included his 17.5-sack campaign in 2021 which allowed him to finish fifth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. Ryans could like the idea of selecting Anderson in an effort to bolster a Houston pa s rush that is in desperate need of top-tier talent. So, if the Texans pa s on a quarterback here, Anderson will almost certainly be the selection. Trade down If the Texans aren't interested in either Anderson or a quarterback at No. 2, it makes a lot of sense to trade down. There will be plenty of teams that would be happy to land either Young or Stroud, so Houston could create a bidding war for its selection and come away with a king's ransom. In this scenario, the Texans might mi s out on some of the blue-chip defensive players atop the Corey Seager Jersey draft. However, they would still be in the range to land one of the many top cornerbacks or pa s-rushing talents available in it. And perhaps they could end up getting Jalen Carter once thought to be the potential No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft in taking a short tumble down the board. As such, this po sibility can't be ruled out even if taking Anderson or a quarterback seems far more likely at this time. MORE: The question about when the Texans will select a quarterback becomes interesting if they pa s on Young or Stroud with the No. 2 pick. Any such decision wouldn't so much be a vote of confidence in Davis Mills, Case Keenum or EJ Perry; it would be more about the team loving Anderson or being confident that they can get another quarterback they like later. Which quarterbacks could those be? Here's a handful that could be sensible targets for the Texans outside of the No. 2 pick. Will Levis, Kentucky Levis has frequently been mocked as a top-10 pick, but there's a chance he could endure a bit of a draft-day slide. Why? Because it doesn't seem like there's a lot of interest in him among the teams choosing quarterbacks atop the draft. Too, the Texans pa sing on Stroud or Young would likely eliminate another potential landing spot for Levis. As such, he could be on the board for the Texans' pick at No. 12 overall. If Houston rolls with Anderson at No. 2, they may be comfortable pursuing Levis, a quarterback who has all the tools needed to be a succe sful NFL starter but just wasn't consistent at Kentucky. He would give the Texans a quarterback with both a high floor and upside, something they haven't had since before Deshaun Watson's holdout. Hendon Hooker, Tenne see If the Texans spend each of their two first-round picks on non-quarterbacks, they could try to land Hooker early in the second round. Houston has the No. 33 pick, so it would be in striking range for the Tenne see product, even if they have to move into the end of Round 1 to get him. Hooker is coming off a torn ACL and will be a 25-year-old rookie, so those black marks could keep him out of the first round. Even so, he shouldn't last long into Day 2 after Sandy Koufax Jersey he recorded 27 pa sing touchdowns and just two interceptions while leading the Volunteers to their best season in decades. MORE: Any other mid-round quarterback It would frankly be a surprise to see the Texans not select a quarterback with one of their first three picks. That said, if they do wait on the position, there are numerous developmental prospects they could target at quarterback. Stetson Bennett and Max Duggan were both winners who led their teams to the College Football Playoff championship game in 2023; Malik Cunningham is an explosive athlete with a live arm who could develop into a solid starter; Dorian Thompson-Robinson has a cannon of an arm and great mobility; and Tanner McKee is another developmental Stanford quarterback who could have a good career if developed properly. Certainly, there is no shortage of options for the Texans if they pa s on a quarterback at No. 2. But it still remains more likely that they will target Stroud or Young with their first pick even if there is some smoke surrounding Breer's speculation.
